Braves honor Memorial Day

American Idol champion Scotty McCreery set to perform and pregame ceremonies planned to celebrate U.S. Military and Armed Forces

In celebration of Memorial Day and the Atlanta Braves continued dedication to honor the United States Military and Armed Forces, fans are invited to enjoy a weekend of fun-filled festivities.

The weekend will start off with a bang with Publix Friday Night Fireworks after the game.

On Saturday, May 26, country music sensation and the 2011 American Idol champion, Scotty McCreery, will perform a free post-game concert after the Braves-Nationals 4:00 p.m. matchup. McCreery’s debut single, “I Love You This Big,” entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at No. 32, becoming the highest debut single since 1990. His debut album, “Clear as Day” was certified Platinum in January, just three months after being released. One of three nominees for New Artist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music, McCreery hails from Braves Country in Garner, North Carolina.

The next day, ESPN Sunday Night Baseball comes to town for the final game of this National League East rivalry with first pitch slated for 8:05 p.m. Braves alumni Marty Perez, Adrienne Devine and Rick Camp will greet fans and sign autographs pregame in Fan Plaza. Presented by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Braves invite all kids 14 and under to run the bases after Sunday’s game.

The Memorial Day celebration festivities culminate on Monday, May 28 as the Braves honor all five branches of the United States Military and pay tribute to the brave men and woman of our Armed Forces. Before the Braves take on the St. Louis Cardinals at 1:10 p.m., special pregame ceremonies will take place on the field to commemorate those who have served.

Braves Memorial Day Celebration Points of Interest:

  • The U.S. Army Silver Wings Parachute team will present the game ball to retired General Peter W. Chiarelli, former Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, and current CEO of One Mind for Research.
  • Celebrating its first year, Emory University and the Atlanta Braves present the BraveHeart: Welcome Back Veterans Southeast Initiative at Turner Field. The BraveHeart Initiative was created in 2011 thanks to a $1 million grant from the Welcome Back Veterans Initiative - a partnership between the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and Major League Baseball. It is a screening, assessment and service program designed to provide veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan education about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and access to mental health and counseling services. BraveHeart representatives will be in Monument Grove distributing PTSD information and promotional items.
  • Honorary team captain and Wounded Warrior, Dan Berschinski, will present the game line-up.
  • A giant American flag, along with stars representing the five branches of military, will be displayed and held by members of our nation’s Military.
  • Military personnel from various branches will line the base paths.
  • The national anthem will be performed by Sgt. Corrin Campbell, a 1st Cavalry Division combat veteran from Duluth, MN, currently serving with the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, Fort Knox, KY.
  • F-16 jets from the 187th Fighter Wing/100th Fighter Squadron out of the Alabama Air National Guard will perform a fly over Turner Field.
  • Echo Taps will be played.

During every game at Turner Field, members of the Armed Forces can show their military ID at ticket windows for 2-for-1 Upper Box tickets. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.braves.com.
