Admiral Sir George Bowyer, 5th and 1st Baronet (1740 – 6 December 1800) was a British naval officer and politician. [1]
Bowyer was the third son of Sir William Bowyer, 3rd Baronet, and his wife Anne, daughter of Sir John Stonhouse, 3rd Baronet, born in Denham, Buckinghamshire. He served as Member of Parliament for Queenborough from 1784 to 1790 and lived at Warfield Grove before inheriting, from his cousin Penelope, Lady Rivers in 1795, Radley Hall in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire).
After a long naval career, he was made a Commodore in 1781 and a Rear Admiral in 1793. In 1794, he was promoted to Vice Admiral, made a baronet and given a pension after losing a leg in the Battle of Ushant, which had made it impossible for him to continue in service. In 1799 he was promoted to Admiral and in April of that year inherited his brother's baronetcy before dying in December 1800.
He married twice; firstly in 1768, Margaret, the daughter of Rev. John Price of Barrington, Gloucestershire and the widow of Sir Jacob Downing, 4th Baronet and secondly in 1782, Henrietta, the daughter and heiress of Admiral Sir Piercy Brett, with whom he had 3 sons and 2 daughters.
