My 5-year-old grandson will visit me in the UK from the USA. He will fly with his father, but he will stay with me for 1 month. I want to fly with him to Central Europe without his father, and back to the UK. I will then bring him back to the USA. What sort of documentation is necessary?

  • You want a notarized affidavit giving you permission to do this, signed by your grandson's mother and father (your son). If the mother is not in the picture for some reason (e.g., divorce), that will also need to be explained and possibly verified with a certified copy of the custody decree. (The mother also has to give permission for the initial trip from the USA to the UK.)

@AndrewLazarus: It doesn't look obvious from the question which grandmother the asker is.

  • @HenningMakholm That's true, now that I look at it. In any case the affidavit will be needed and an explanation for the absence of the mother on the initial leg will be needed.

@AndrewLazarus an explanation of the mother's absence is not needed, only evidence either that she has permitted the child to travel without her or that the father has sole custody.

That's what I meant by an explanation.
