MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The U.S. Senate has confirmed Martinsburg attorney William J. "Bill" Powell as the next U.S. attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia.
U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., congratulated Powell in a tweet Tuesday night following the Senate action, saying she was "honored" to recommend his nomination to President Donald Trump.
Powell, who most recently worked as a Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney, ran for judge last year in the Eastern Panhandle's 23rd Judicial Circuit.
He worked for Jackson Kelly PLLC for about 15 years before being hired by Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Harvey earlier this year.
A 1985 graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law, Powell also has served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia, prosecuting fraud and violent crime cases.
According to the Congressional Record, Powell was among a group of five U.S. district attorneys that were confirmed by the Senate for four-year terms on Tuesday, joining Halsey B. Frank of Maine, D. Michael Hurst Jr. of Mississippi, Jeffrey B. Jensen of Missouri and Thomas L. Kirsch II of Indiana.
Powell was among 18 nominations sent by The White House to the Senate in August.
His confirmation as U.S. attorney comes little more than 10 years after President George W. Bush nominated him to replace the late U.S. District Judge W. Craig Broadwater in May 2007, according to congressional records.
Powell's nomination to the federal court bench died in the Senate and was returned to the president in January 2009, records said.
President Barack Obama's nomination of Gina M. Groh to replace Broadwater was confirmed by the Senate in March 2012 by a vote of 95-2.
