The Nokia 6.1, also known as the Nokia 6 (2018)[2][3] and the second-generation Nokia 6, is a Nokia-branded upper-mid-range smartphone running the Android operating system. It serves as the successor to the first-generation Nokia 6. The phone famously features an aluminum unibody milled out of a single chunk of 6000-series aluminum.

On January 4, a Chinese retailer leaked the 2018 version of Nokia 6, including specs, press shots, and more. Just a day later, Nokia officially listed the handset on its website to confirm the release of the phone in China.[4][5] On February 25, it was officially launched at MWC, along with 4 other new models for international availability.

Specifications[edit]

Hardware[edit]

The second-generation Nokia 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630, an upgrade from the Snapdragon 430 present in its predecessor. Depending on which version you buy it either comes with 32gb storage and 3 GB of LPDDR4 RAM or 64 GB.[6] storage and 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

The display panel is the same 5.5" 1080p IPS LCD in the original, although the front bezels have been slimmed down and the capacitive navigation buttons and home button have been replaced with on-screen keys.[7]

The camera setup is also the same combination of 16 MP rear and 8 MP selfie found in its predecessor, and retains the "Bothie" feature, which uses both cameras and splits the screen in half to capture an image[8] or does picture in picture mode, showing the inwards camera in a small rectangle on top of the outwards camera, or vice versa.

One of the main changes is the replacement of the micro-USB port in favor of the reversible USB-C, as well as the shift of the fingerprint sensor to the rear of the device. It keeps the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Nokia 6 2018 (AKA 6.1) also supports Nokia OZO audio.

Software[edit]

The phone launched in China running Android 7.1.1 Nougat and is upgradable to Android 8.0 Oreo or to Android 9.0 Pie. The international version launching later ships with Android 8.1 Oreo[9] and is part of the Android One program, promising regular security updates and two years of Android OS upgrades.
The device received the stable Android 9.0 Pie update at the end of October 2018.
The Nokia 6.1 should get 2 years Android OS updates and 3 years of security updates.

Reception[edit]

Reviews for Nokia 6.1 have been mostly positive. Critics have praised its software, screen and build quality and design. Its camera has been criticised[10][11][12] for lacking detail and washed out colors.
